3 Mindset Shifts to Grow Your Photography Business

Do you want to grow your photography business? Many photographers are frustrated with the lack of growth they see in their business. The truth is, there are many steps that you can take to help increase your success rate and make more money! In this blog post, we will discuss three mindset shifts that will help you grow your photography business.

Shift #1: You Need to Believe You are able to Make a Living in Photography

The first mindset shift that you need to make is that you need to believe you are capable. Too often, photographers just don't believe they can make money with their passion. And as you've probably heard before -- whether you believe you can, or you believe you can't, you're right. There are thousands of photographers making a good living doing something they love. Why not join the ranks?

Shift #2: Become a Business Owner

Next, I want you to focus on shifting your identity, or at least adding the title "business owner" so that you can focus on the right things to build a profitable business. Stop thinking of yourself as just a photographer who does photography, and start thinking of yourself as the owner of a photography business. This will help you to take your photography career more seriously and give you the focus that you need to make it successful. Once you make this shift, you will start making the decisions that business owners make to help them grow.

This was the hardest one for me because for over 5 years I refused to hire another photographer to help me scale my business. Once I realized I was running a business it allowed me to look at my situation through the lens of --how many clients I was unable to help serve because I was only one person with many responsibilities in front of me. That's when I finally realized I needed help within my business and I could be MORE profitable by hiring the right people within my business.

Shift #3: Start Niched and then Later You Can Add More Photography Styles in to your Photography Business

When you start off with the assumption that photography is photography and there isn't much difference between photographing a wedding, newborn photo session or family portrait--it can be very easy for us as photographers to get bogged down when things aren't going smoothly because we don't have experience within our niche AND it's even easier for clients to not want to pay premium prices because they can easily compare you to every other photographer. After all, you aren't positioning yourself as an expert.

Once you niche down, you can easily justify charging more for your photography while at the same time helping your clients understand that they should expect to pay premium prices because of how specialized you are within that genre.

Let me know, what area do you specialize in, and where are you struggling this year when it comes to growing your photography business?
